what is Shiatsu massage

If you've experienced Swedish Massage or Therapeutic Massage before, you probably associate massage with oil, direct skin contact, kneading, and long flowing strokes.

Shiatsu Massage is different.

Originating in Japan, Shiatsu is a distinctive form of bodywork that uses rhythmic pressure, compression, stretching, and movement. It is generally performed fully clothed and without massage oil, creating a massage experience unlike many Western styles.

We're excited to introduce Shiatsu Massage at Tsingtao Wellness Spa in Markham and Vaughan.

Here's what makes it unique.

What Is Shiatsu Massage?

The word Shiatsu literally means “finger acupressure.”

Shiatsu developed in Japan and incorporates elements of traditional Japanese manual therapies alongside concepts associated with East Asian medicine.

During a session, the practitioner uses the thumbs, fingers, palms, arms and elbows to apply controlled pressure to different areas of the body.

But Shiatsu isn't simply pressing pressure points.

A treatment may also incorporate:

  • Rhythmic compression

  • Holding techniques

  • Gentle stretching

  • Kneading

  • Joint rotations

  • Assisted movements

  • Relaxing, soothing techniques

Your practitioner can adjust the treatment depending on your comfort, areas of tension, and individual preferences.

What Does a Shiatsu Massage Feel Like?

Imagine a massage without long, oily strokes.

Instead, you feel a gradual rhythm of pressure moving across the body.

The practitioner may press and hold one area, release it, move to another point, gently stretch an arm or leg, or guide a joint through a comfortable movement.

Some areas may receive firmer attention when they feel particularly tense, while others may receive lighter pressure.

Shiatsu is generally intended to feel firm but comfortable, not painfully deep.

Many people find its repetitive rhythm particularly relaxing.

You Stay Fully Clothed

For clients who enjoy massage but aren't comfortable undressing or having oil applied to their skin, Shiatsu offers an interesting alternative. This is one of the biggest differences between Shiatsu and many other massage treatments. There is generally no massage oil involved. You can choose either fully cloth-on during the massage, or fully undress yourself and having this massage over the sheet for more relaxing result.

We recommend arriving in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move and stretch easily, if you prefer to be cloth-on during the session.

Shiatsu and Traditional Eastern Wellness

Traditional Shiatsu practice is associated with the concept of meridians, or pathways through which qi or ki is traditionally believed to flow.

Practitioners may apply pressure along these pathways with the traditional goal of encouraging balance throughout the body.

These concepts come from traditional East Asian approaches to wellness and shouldn't be confused with established anatomical structures in Western medicine.

Modern scientific research specifically investigating Shiatsu remains limited, and more high-quality research is needed to establish many of its proposed therapeutic effects.

For this reason, we prefer to think of Shiatsu as a complementary wellness and bodywork experience, rather than a replacement for medical care.

Why Do People Choose Shiatsu?

People may choose Shiatsu for many different reasons.

Some simply love pressure-point massage.

Others want to relax but don't particularly enjoy oil massage.

And some appreciate having stretching and movement incorporated into their treatment.

Shiatsu may be worth trying if you're looking for:

Relaxation

The rhythmic nature of Shiatsu can create a calm, deeply relaxing treatment experience.

Relief from Everyday Muscle Tension

Controlled pressure and gentle movement can feel particularly satisfying when muscles feel tight or tired.

Gentle Stretching

Shiatsu may incorporate assisted stretches and joint movements, making the experience different from a traditional relaxation massage.

A Massage Without Oil

No slippery feeling afterward and generally no need to shower before returning to the rest of your day.

A Fully Clothed Massage

For some clients, this simply makes the massage experience more comfortable.

Shiatsu vs. Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic Massage at Tsingtao Wellness Spa is generally more focused on specific muscular concerns such as soreness, stiffness, trigger points, and areas requiring targeted soft-tissue work.

Shiatsu takes a different approach.

Rather than concentrating primarily on one problematic muscle, Shiatsu traditionally takes a more holistic approach to the body using pressure and movement.

So if your main concern is a particularly sore shoulder, stubborn muscle knot, or another specific muscular problem, you may prefer Therapeutic Massage.

If you want a full-body experience combining rhythmic pressure, relaxation, and stretching without oil, consider Shiatsu.

Not sure which one to choose? Our team can help you decide.

Shiatsu vs. Thai Massage

Shiatsu and Thai Massage are often compared because both use stretching and body movement, but the experience is quite different.

Shiatsu Massage is a Japanese form of bodywork performed on a massage table or mat, usually with the client fully clothed and lying still while the practitioner applies rhythmic pressure, holds, and gentle assisted movements. The focus is on calm, grounded pressure using thumbs, palms, and body weight in a slow, meditative rhythm.

Thai Massage, on the other hand, is more dynamic and active. It is traditionally performed on a floor mat, and the practitioner uses hands, elbows, knees, and even feet to guide the client through deeper stretches and yoga-like positions. Thai Massage often involves more movement and can feel more energizing and physically engaging.

Choose Shiatsu if:You prefer a calm, rhythmic, grounding treatment with steady pressure and gentle stretching.

Choose Thai Massage if:You enjoy deeper stretching, more movement, and a more active, yoga-like bodywork experience.

Both are excellent traditional therapies, but Shiatsu is generally more meditative and pressure-based, while Thai Massage is more dynamic and stretch-focused.

What Happens During Your First Shiatsu Massage?

Before treatment begins, your practitioner will discuss your preferences, areas of tension, comfort level, and any relevant health concerns.

You'll remain comfortably clothed during your treatment, or fully undress yourself and lying between the sheets, and having entire session over the sheet for more relaxing result.

Depending on the session, your practitioner may ask you to change positions so different areas can be comfortably accessed. Shiatsu is traditionally performed on a floor mat, although treatment on a massage table is also common.

Throughout the session, communicate with your practitioner.

Pressure should always be adjusted to your comfort.

Is Shiatsu Safe for Everyone?

Shiatsu is generally considered safe, but massage and pressure-based bodywork aren't appropriate for everyone.

Certain medical conditions, acute illness or fever, fractures, wounds, active inflammation, some cardiovascular conditions, and other health circumstances may require modification or medical clearance before treatment.

If you have a medical condition, are recovering from an injury or procedure, or aren't sure whether Shiatsu is appropriate for you, speak with your healthcare provider and let your practitioner know before treatment.

Massage should complement—not replace—appropriate medical assessment and treatment.
